The world's first speaker set with THX Select 2 compliancy

System 5 "5.2-Set Concert"

World First
This is the world's first speaker set with THX Select 2 compliancy. If you’re a video buff, or a music aficionado who wants the intimate familiarity of your favourite tracks to be extra amazing, then the System 5 THX Select 2 is definitely for you.

Bombastic Sound
Why buy a surround system where the sub’s bigger than your fridge? Enjoy easy room placement with the two cube Teufel S 5000 SW THX Select 2 subwoofers (400 watts RMS) – as well as the simply overwhelming sound they deliver.

Quick and Easy
A breeze to set up, and cost-effective to boot, there are no extra AV receivers or supplies needed to make this German Quality built set astound with its sound. The System 5 THX Select 2’s delivery is breathtakingly precise, adding bone shatteringly-deep Berliner sound for your cinema or music experience.

Two Dipoles
The supporting background of this set is rendered through specialised two-way dipole speakers. These two dipoles contain two tweeter/midrange driver combinations per side displaced by a full 180 degrees. The unfocused, diffused sound they transmit plays a significant role in the set's tonal integrity.

Two Subwoofers
Instead of a single, refrigerator-sized subwoofer, we ship System 5 THX Select 2 with two compact subwoofers. Both S 5000 SW THX Select 2 subwoofers integrate with ease into your living environment: They're small and easy to install.

Worth every Penny
System 5 at the Select 2 level marks a new quality milestone regarding surround sound in the “normal” living room - at a price that maximises the advantage of direct-distribution by the manufacturer.

Five identical speakers with flat membrane fronts
These identically constructed satellite speakers utilise flat membrane technology, which means no phase shifts, reduced distortion, and no bells. Thus the tweeters benefit from their position close to the rear for sound shares up to 2000 Hz.

No Phase Shifts
The identical speakers use a flat-diaphragm technology with no phase shifts. This means less distortion and a real optimisation of directionality for your tunes. The strict THX Select 2 requirement: of 25 Hz at 105 dB at the - 3dB point is a requirement other brands have been unable to meet. Our innovative German engineers have implemented two super spec subwoofers to make this a reality for you.

Stylish and Unobtrusive
This package is stylish; it is unobtrusive, and living room friendly. The dimensions are based on a subtle design with the front speakers and the subwoofers being so compact allows them to easily blend in with any home decor.

All Teufel products come with a 12 year guarantee, an eight week trial period, and our low low prices are inclusive of VAT! Order your shipment of Teufel Branded goods today.

Dual subwoofers

When we conceived System 5 THX Select 2 Certified, we knew we needed to deliver bone-dry bass down to seriously low levels. That's why we chose to equip the set with two subwoofers. This way we're able to meet the stringent THX Select 2 requirements without shipping a single subwoofer the size of a small fridge. The System 5's two subwoofers are driven by modern Class D end phases.

Perfect for wall mounting

system5 thx select2 s500d back nocover

Living-room friendly dimensions and unobtrusive design make System 5 THX Select 2 Certified perfect for any environment. The speakers' flat design makes them perfect for wall mounting, and the improved directional characteristics required by THX Select 2 specifications translate into perfect sound even outside the optimal sitting positions.

More bass quality
A second subwoofer isn't only good for aesthetic reasons, it also has a positive effect on sound quality – less risk of standing waves and their negative impact of room itself. A second subwoofer can counteract the room frequency exactly, resulting in a very dry bass. Any "droning" sounds disappear, and bass becomes more exact.

High efficiency

A variety of different loudspeaker chassis generate a number of sound generating surfaces with an additional positive effect of a 91 dB/w/m degree of efficiency. Thanks to this system's efficiency, no additional expensive AV receiver is needed. The set is capable of generating an astoundingly clean and solid volume from 50 watts per channel.

Satellite Speaker S 500 FCR

Satellite Speaker S 500 FCR The S 500 FCR is the first external loudspeaker worldwide to have passed the stringent THX Select 2 certification.

Based on the horizontal configuration of its acclaimed predecessor M 550 FCR, this model has been significantly enhanced. Immediately noticeable changes are the newly developed high-tech, flat-diaphragm midrange drivers radiating all midrange frequencies from the entire effective driver surface. They are also free of phase shifts generated conventional cone drivers. The absence of phase opposition reduces distortion drastically. Because of their extremely rigid sandwich-construction the flat drivers manifest exceptional impulse behaviour and reproduce a superbly balanced frequency response, augmented by the central placement of its dome tweeter. The proximity of tweeter and midrange drivers improves overall sound radiation. Now the listener can enjoy the full range of sound even outside the acoustic “sweet spot.” This is an additional benefit of the higher THX Select 2 standards.

The flat diaphragms in their flush integrated cages avoid negative “diffraction” effects – there are no corners or edges after all. In order to eliminate distortion fields like those caused by holding grooves, the speaker grille is realised as cover hood eliminating the need for bolts.

The rapid and highly responsive sound reproduction of the set is the consequence its excellent efficiency rated at 91 dB/w/m. Additional benefit: even less powerful AV-receivers will deliver enormous volume outputs.

The low depth of the speakers - only 16 cm – allows for unobtrusive placement in any home environment – they are perfect for mounting to the wall! Brackets for this purpose are already attached to the speakers. Otherwise, you can simply place them on a shelf or mount them on the optional M 4002 P speaker.

Subwoofer S 5000 SW

Subwoofer S 5000 SW The S 5000 SW of the System 5 THX Select 2 set impressively continues Teufel’s tradition of very powerful subwoofers. A 300 mm neodymium woofer with tremendous stroke using a down-fire configuration operates within a 55-litre housing, Teufel’s trademark DPU technology means interference-free bass reproduction, even at extremely high volume levels.

By combining two of these powerful subwoofers, we have been able to meet the high demands of THX Select 2: 105 dB continuous output at 25 Hz minimum frequency at -3 dB, without having to construct a subwoofer of gigantic proportions.

[...]You get two whacking greate cartons with full-size subwoofers inside (hooray) and five speakers no bigger than the regular bookshelves you might find in a kid's room [...]

Call the police!
[...] But the business of these boxes is film soundtracks. I slapped Dark Knight into the Blu-ray deck and settled down for the ride...

Filmed in large chunks in the IMAX format, the soundtrack of Dark Knight has a serious level of difference between quiet parts and the most literally explosive. As the film begins, you get quiet and tinkly sounds, followed by a big smash, as the crooks set up a wire from one building to the next. The performance capabilities of the Teufel system suddenly become clear. Like a full set of bike leathers that make their owner look silly whilst doing the weekend shop, but badass when the dude is on his Ducati, these speakers, once fed a good slice of power, came to life and absolutely stonked.

All that the THX certification implies is in there. Great directionality, superb placement of sounds around the room due to excellent off-axis performance, and a bass-end that is literally stupefying.[...]When Batman thudded down onto the roof of an escaping van, I was almost lifted out of my seat. The system can go loud from quiet effortlessly.

I also loved how well the subwoofers blended with the small speakers, without any trace of a 'hole' between the two sorts - impressive considering the size of the surrounds.

Get set, go
[...] You will either need cool neighbours or a detached home, as they do go very loud and with absolutely brain-splitting dynamics.

HCC Verdict:
Pros:
THX Select 2 certification delivers huge impact; excellent value for money.

Cons:
Less suitable for 5.1 music than some; a bit ugly, too.

The performance capabilities of the Teufel system suddenly became clear. Like a full set of bike leathers that make their owner look silly whilst doing the weekend shop, but a badass when the dude is on his Ducati, these speakers, once fed a decent slice of power, came to life and absolutely stonked.

All that the THX certification implies is in there. Great directionality, superb placement of sounds around the room due to excellent off-axis performance, and a bass-end that is literally stupefying. However, the main five speakers do not seem that efficient, and I needed to crank ten percent more than I normally would to get the satisfying reference level.

At this point, the two 12in subwoofers, which had been left at the little mark that says "THX" on the main knob's marking, had to be turned down a touch by way of the LFE level on the remote. With that sorted, it was back to the film and, as the villains got offed one by one in the early sequences, I was beaten into joyfull jelly - metaphorically speaking.

When Batman thudded down into the roof of an escaping van, I was almost lifted out of my seat. The system can go from loud to quiet effortlessly. I also loved how well the subwoofers blended with the small speakers, without any trace of a "hole" between the two sorts - impressive considering the size of the surrounds.

Teufel has modified its successful System 5 to create the world's first THX Select 2-certified speaker package, which means it's designed to meet the exacting sonic standards laid down by George Lucas and his band of hardcore home cinema crusaders.

The idea behind THX Select 2 is to deliver the best possible sound quality in rooms where the distance from the listening position to the screen is between 10 and 12 feet. To that end, THX Select 2 certified speakers must feature controlled directivity, in order to achieve "a full soundstage with precise imaging for all types of audio content", and that's one of the things Teufel has tweaked to earn this certification.

Another is the inclusion of two subwoofers, which helps the system reach THX's bass requirements (105dB continuous output at 25Hz minimum frequency, at -3 dB). To get that sort of performance from a single sub it would have to be absolutely massive, so instead Teufel has opted for two reasonably-sized bass boxes, which make the system more 'living room-friendly'.

For the front and centre channels, you get three S 500 FCR speakers, an upgraded version of its predecessor, the M 550 FCR. It's the first speaker ever to get the THX Select 2 seal of approval so we're deep in uncharted territory here. Key to their performance is their newly-developed flat diaphragm midrange drivers, which radiate mids from the entire effective surface area and avoid pesky phase shifts that conventional cone drivers can suffer from.

Teufel also reckons that the drivers' rigid sandwich construction ensures a balanced frequency response, while the central placement of the dome tweeter improves sound radiation and lets you hear full-range sound outside of the sweet spot. And because they fit flush into the enclosure, you don't get any detrimental diffraction effects off corners or edges.

Unsurprisingly, the build quality of these front/centre speakers is phenomenal. Weighty, robust and clad in a fetching old school dark wenge finish, they really look the part. The speaker grille is a removable hood that fits over the front without the need for bolts, another measure designed to keep the distortion wolf from the door.
At 16cm deep, they're surprisingly compact compared with Teufel's other high-end speakers, and can be mounted on optional M 4002 P stands or on the wall using the pre-attached brackets on the back. Also on the rear is an alcove housing a pair of sturdy gold-plated binding posts, found on all of the system's speakers.

Because this is a movie-centric system through and through, you get dipole speakers for the rear-channels, in this case a pair of S 500 D's - again the first of their type to be THX Select 2 certified. As opposed to direct radiating speakers, which fire sound towards the listener, these three-way dipole speakers create a diffuse, enveloping effect, as if the sound is coming from the rear walls, which is preferable for movies.

Again they're beautifully constructed and effortlessly elegant. Each one features 100mm midrange drivers and 25mm dome tweeters on the front and back, while the speaker grilles on each side also slip on without any bolts or clips.

The sub charged with the task of delivering THX's tricky bass demands is the S 5000 SW, which boasts a 300mm neodymium woofer and musters 200W of firepower. As mentioned, you get two with this system, removing the need for one massive back-breaking box, but their 37 x 54 x 47cm dimensions aren't exactly compact either - it could still take some serious reshuffling to squeeze two of these bad boys in your front room.

They're built like a tank, dressed in dark wenge and sport a fetching silver blob on the front that makes them look a bit like Star Wars droids. On the back of each one you'll find a phase switch, volume dial (with a mark helpfully showing THX's recommended level) and RCA input and output.

But enough of its features, how does the system sound? In a word sensational. First of all, it's earth-shakingly powerful - feed it any of the loud, chaotic action scenes from Transformers on Blu-ray and the ferocious sound could strip wallpaper. But the beauty is you don't need an amp the size of a house to make them sing - the system's high efficiency means you get decent results even from modestly-rated amps.

The potent soundstage is boosted in no small part by those two subs, which work in perfect harmony and dig down to the very depths of the frequency range. When Megatron and Prime lock horns at the movie's denouement, there's lots of deep bass rumbling and the enormous explosions really thumb you in the chest. There's no flab to the low frequencies - they're tight and forthright, which allows them to respond to sudden bangs and pops without any delays that could upset the rhythm of a scene.

But it's not all about brute force. The sound is incredibly detailed too, and therefore the Teufels are able to explore the finer nuances of the movie's few quiet scenes with real finesse. This also lets voices come through clear and natural at all times, even when robots are clattering around the soundstage.

The system is also admirably cohesive - the fronts, centre and rears are beautifully matched, and don't reveal any tonal variation as sounds sweep from front to back. The subs contribute to this unified front, blending seamlessly with the other speakers - all of which results in massively entertaining movie playback.

Despite its home cinema credentials, System 5 is also a dab hand with music, handling DVD-Audio, CDs and Blu-ray music discs with the level of refinement we've come to expect from Teufel speakers. The smooth, elegant and insightful sound is pure aural seduction.

Verdict
Overall then, the System 5 really delivers on its promises, providing a fast, feisty and well-integrated sound that lives up to its Select 2 certification. We can't even quibble with the price, as it's a reasonable amount to pay for such an accomplished system, which not only comes with George Lucas' seal of approval but now ours too.
